What is a Urologist?
The urologists at South County Urological, Inc. are physicians qualified to treat all problems - both medical and surgical - that occur in the urinary system of men, women and children.
Conditions most commonly treated include prostate enlargement; tumors of the kidney, bladder and prostate; bladder infections; and kidney stones. In addition, we treat genital problems in men such as infections, infertility and impotence.
Our urologists also offer unique subspecialization expertise in:

- ultrasonic diagnosis of prostatic lesions
- state-of-the-art diagnosis and therapy of impotence including all prosthetic options

Abraham S. Hawatmeh, MD, FACS

Dr. Hawatmeh earned his medical degree at the University of Parma in Italy in 1969. He completed his surgery internship at the Parma University Hospital and then moved to the United States, where he continued his postgraduate training.
His surgery residency was served at Northwestern University Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Dr. Hawatmeh then performed four years of urology residency at St. Louis University School of Medicine. As part of his work, he was awarded a fellowship by the Kidney Foundation of Eastern Missouri. He also performed research on renal transplantation.
Though Dr. Hawatmeh completed his formal postgraduate training in 1980, he continues to pursue additional trainings in the latest techniques such as microwave thermotherapy for enlarged prostate, ultrasonography, laser surgery, laparoscopy, and cryosurgery. Dr. Hawatmeh is certified by the American Board of Urology and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
Since 1980, he has served as a clinical assistant professor and assistant professor of urology at St. Louis University School of Medicine. Also, since 1994, he has been chief of urology at St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis.
Dr. Hawatmeh maintains memberships in both regional and national societies including the American Urological Association, the American Medical Association, the St. Louis Urological Society, the Society of Urologic Cryosurgeons, the National Association of Arab Americans, and Physicians Who Care.
Dr. Hawatmeh is very active in his profession and in the local community. He has lectured extensively and written numerous research papers about urology. He is a frequent presenter at professional assemblies. He has also been interviewed on radio and television on topics such as male sexual dysfunction, renal transplants, vasectomy reversals, and cryosurgery.
Not limited to medical interests, he has also been interviewed extensively on radio and television about his involvements in Arab-American relations and his soccer league. Dr. Hawatmeh was a guest of President Clinton for the Jordan-Israel Peace Agreement signing in October 1994 while he was the president of the board of directors of the National Association of Arab Americans.

Frederick P. Walters, MD

In 1979, Dr. Walters received his bachelor's degree with highest honors in chemistry from Emory University in Atlanta. His honors research project was published in the Journal of Urology. He then earned his medical degree at the St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1987, where again he published an honors research project in the Journal of Urology.
After his surgery internship in St. Louis, he pursued a surgery residency and four years of urology residency at Tulane University Affiliated Hospitals in New Orleans from 1988 to 1993. He joined South County Urological upon completion of his training. At the same time, he became a physician investigator for the St. Louis Center for Clinical Research.
Dr. Walters is certified by the American Board of Urology. Dr. Walters has continued his training in the latest techniques, including laser surgery and cryosurgery.
Dr. Walters continues to publish papers in professional journals and lectures at professional assemblies. He is a member of the American Urological Association.

Salim Hawatmeh, MD

Urologist and surgeon Dr. Salim (Sah-leem’) Hawatmeh, son of Dr. Abe Hawatmeh, joined South County Urological in 2006.
A 1999 graduate of St. Louis University School of Medicine, Dr. Hawatmeh recently completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, where he became its chief urological resident and a clinical instructor. During this same time, he received the Praecis Pharmaceuticals / AUA Gerald P. Murphy Scholar Award, which is presented to urology residents for distinction in the study of prostate cancer.
As a urologist, Dr. Hawatmeh is trained to diagnose and treat problems affecting the male and female urinary tract, and the male reproductive system.
As a former resident at the Mayo Clinic, however, he is trained and experienced in some of the advanced urologic procedures available anywhere. These procedures include laparascopic radical prostatectomy using robotics to treat men with prostate cancer, microwave thermal therapy to shrink an enlarged prostate and kidney-sparing surgery for persons with kidney cancers.
Dr. Hawatmeh has participated in scientific presentations before the American Urological Association (AUA), the Society of UroRadiology, the Mayo Clinic and at St. Louis University. He has also co-authored articles for medical journals and conducted research on renal cancer.
Dr. Hawatmeh is fluent in Italian and Arabic, and proficient in French and Spanish.
He received his undergraduate degree in 1995 from Stanford University in Palo alto, CA. Prior to that, he attended Country Day School, now known as MICDS.
