Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
STDs are among the most common infectious diseases in the United States. They can be bacterial or viral-based, and are usually spread through vaginal, anal or oral sex.

Previously called venereal diseases, STDs are serious illnesses that require treatment. Most produce few or no symptoms and can be cured. However, some STDs cannot be cured.

Some common STDs and their symptoms may include:

  • Genital warts. Produces small painless bumps in the genital or anal areas.
  • Gonorrhea. Produces a discharge from vagina or penis; painful urination.
  • Hepatitis B and C. Abdominal pain, dark urine and yellowing of skin. May not have symptoms initially.
  • HIV/AIDS. Fatigue, night sweats, chills, fever, weight loss and frequent infections. May not have symptoms initially.
  • Syphilis. Mild symptoms, often goes undetected initially. Painless genital sores.
